Bologna is
located in the heart of the Emilia-Romagna Region and is of ancient Etruscan origin. This city is not yet touched by mass tourism, making it an ideal destination for those who love history, tradition and good food. The multiple nicknames which Bologna has earned over the years express the versatility that characterizes the city and its surrounding area. Visitors keen on thoroughly exploring the city will be surprised to discover an attractive city with numerous interesting things to see and do.
Bologna is
“La Dotta” (the learned one) because of the culture that reigns in the old town centre where the Oldest University in the Western World is located, as well as several Museums.
Bologna is
“La Grassa” (the fat one) due to
its culinary tradition, which is unlike any other in the world. You cannot claim to know Bologna without tasting its traditional and delicious dishes, served in the many local restaurants.
Bologna is also
“La Rossa” (the red), an attribute of medieval origin that derives from its distinctive “terracotta” colour; most buildings in the old town centre were built with this material, which is typical of this area, and is still widely used today.
From our point of view, Bologna is also
“the Nocturnal One” because it never sleeps. Nightclubs, theatres, music shows and nightspots provide moments of leisure and entertainment, and make Bologna appealing even at night. Bologna is waiting to be discovered.
1.THE CLASSICAL CITY
The heart of Bologna is not the city centre,
Piazza Maggiore is. In fact, the Bolognese do not go to the city centre, they go to the
“Piazza” around which are located the city’s most important public buildings as well as those of
greater cultural interest: Palazzo d’Accursio, Palazzo Re Enzo, Palazzo del Podestà, the majestic Basilica di San Petronio, the elegant Fontana del Nettuno, Palazzo dei Notai and the spectacular Palazzo de’ Banchi. Among the most interesting monuments is the
Complex of Santo Stefano or of the 7 churches, also known as the
“Holy Jerusalem of Bologna” for its numerous symbols linked to the Passion of Christ. This 1000-year-old Benedictine monastery comprises a Byzantine church built nearly 1500 years ago, a Romanesque church, a crypt and two cloisters of incomparable beauty.
The Archiginnasio and the Anatomical Theatre:
Built to be the first “unique” headquarter of the Ancient
Studium of Bologna, it is the oldest University in Europe. The Anatomical Theatre, where dead bodies where dissected during medicine and anatomy lessons, is located on the first floor. It is also home to the most important Egyptian Museum in Italy after the one in Turin.

2.THE UNDERGROUND CITY
It seems hard to believe, but once upon a time, Bologna was full of canals, with boats carrying goods, silks and fresh water sailors, that flowed into an important river port. The existing Via del Porto is a modern day proof of a reality that no longer exists, or rather, one which has been transformed: it is now underground. It is possible to visit the Aposa stream, out of which the Etruscan Bologna was created, the Mario baths, the Salara (a port salt warehouse), and the canals which are still visible from the city centre during guided tours of the city. The Roman aqueduct (30 BC), located on the outskirts of the city, leaves visitors speechless due to the incomparable beauty of its concretions and the subsoil of the Sala Borsa shows the remains of the Roman Forum and the former Basilica.
