BOLOGNA
Idyllically set just in the heart of Emilia-Romagna, Bologna, an ancient city of Etruscan origins, is not affected by mass tourism, what makes it the ideal holiday destination for those interested in history, traditions and gastronomy.
Bologna’s numerous nicknames bear witness to the huge versatility of both the city itself and the surrounding territory, which are scattered with outstanding places of interest.
Bologna is called
"La Dotta" (the Learned), since its old town gathers plenty of cultural expressions and is home to the oldest University in the
Western World and to plenty of interesting Museums. It is called
"La Notturna" (the Night City), since it is scattered with plenty of lively night clubs, pubs and theatres performing amazing music shows which make it extremely captivating.
"La Grassa" (the Fat): Bologna’s culinary tradition is unrivalled. The numerous restaurants of both the city centre and the surrounding area give tourists the possibility to taste delicious dishes and excellent local specialities.
"La Rossa" (the Red City): this nickname was coined in the Middle Ages to celebrate the local "cotto" stone, which was largely used to build the impressive palaces of the old town.
1. THE CLASSICAL CITY
The heart of
Bologna’s old town cannot be simply called city centre, since local inhabitants call it
“Piazza”.
That’s the reason why
Piazza Maggiore is the city’s most popular gathering place. It is dominated by the city’s most important public buildings, such as
Palazzo d'Accursio, Palazzo Re Enzo, Palazzo del Podestà, the Majestic Basilica of St. Petronio, the elegant
Fountain of Neptune,
Palazzo dei Notai and the impressive Palazzo de' Banchi.
Complex of St. Stefano (also known as
Complex of 7 churches) The important Benedictine monastery of
"St. Jerusalem of Bologna", which was founded one thousand years ago, derives its name from the numerous symbolic connections related to the Passion of Christ. It gathers a majestic Byzantine church dating back to 1500 years ago, a sumptuous
Romanesque Church, a fascinating crypt and two wonderful cloisters. The Archiginnasio and the
Anatomical Theatre Originally built to house the first seat of the ancient Bologna’s Studium, it is the oldest university in Europe. The first floor is occupied by the impressive Anatomical Theatre, where students of medicine and anatomy dissect cadavers for various purposes. It is also home to the second most important
Egyptian Museum in Italy (Turin hosts the most popular one). For further

2. THE UNDERGROUND CITY
Many years ago, Bologna was crossed by large channels where huge merchant ships bearing silk and further goods sailed to the local river port. The current Via del Porto bears witness to this ancient reality, which has recently been turned into an underground one. The city centre is occupied by the
ancient Aposa stream, where the original
Etruscan settlement was founded, the so-called
Mario Baths, the
Salara (the ancient salt warehouse) and plenty of ancient channels. Not to be missed are the impressive
Roman aqueduct (30 B.C.), which is situated a short distance from the
city centre, and
Sala Borsa underground spaces, which cherish the remains of the ancient Roman
Forum and Basilica. For further information:
